We created a substack to deliver stories about Scarborough's culture & community directly to your inbox.
We are Scarborough Made, a community arts collective championing Toronto’s East through documentary storytelling, creative youth mentorships and public art.
We grew from the need to change the perspective on how underserved neighbourhoods in Scarborough were being portrayed in the media.
In 2019, we started documenting stories of the culture and community we grew up around in Scarborough through photography and cinematography. To engage the public, we started developing mixed media installations to connect people and spark dialogue around our shared human experience.
Building from our lived experiences, we saw the need to bring resources and creative opportunities back to Toronto’s East to support emerging youth artists. We needed to enable future documentary storytellers with the tools to build community through the arts and Scarborough Made became our way to accomplish this.
Every year we look to produce new stories that reflect the communities that makeup Scarborough by mentoring emerging artists in producing community stories and public art.
We’re now expanding into more written narratives to share the power of Scarborough’s culture and community with you.
